Intimacy Coordinator
Intimacy Coordinator
An intimacy coordinator is a trained professional who ensures that intimate scenes and sensitive content in film, television, theatre, and the performing arts are depicted safely, consensually, and respectfully. They collaborate with actors, directors, and production teams to choreograph scenes involving physical touch, nudity, or simulated sex, always prioritising the performers' boundaries and well-being.
The role involves analysing and managing the physical and psychological risks of a scene to align the director’s artistic vision with the consent of the cast.
1. Safe & Consensual Choreography
Collaborate with actors and directors to integrate intimate scenes naturally into the narrative, using detailed risk management (actor intakes, risk assessments, nudity riders) to safeguard well-being.
2. Coordinating Production and On-Set Protocols
Work closely with all departments—AD, wardrobe, art, and production—to ensure alignment on safety guidelines, and oversee rehearsals and closed-set filming to maintain a respectful environment.
3. Supporting Actor Well-Being
Advocate for actors by monitoring for signs of discomfort or trauma, facilitating open dialogue about boundaries, and providing essential post-scene support to help them transition safely.
